Official and Civic Duties
As the official Town Crier for the historic market town of Kendal in the English Lake District, I am called upon to make Civic Announcements and Proclamations on behalf of the Council in traditional 18th century dress.
I am also able to lend my support to civic events such as the Christmas Lights switch-on ceremony, and charity fund raising events like Red Nose Day.

My Wider Role.
But I have a wider role too. I attend the openings of new or re-launched shops and businesses to add colour to their event and increase interest by local media.
I don't only work in Kendal though. My Bell and I are happy to travel. To date we have proclaimed from Cornwall to Glasgow, and I'm used to working with publicity agencies and public relations companies.
I attend fairs, celebrations and exhibitions too, and can undertake anything from straightforward announcements and proclamations, to organising and co-ordinating the event on your behalf.
My experiences as a professional Toastmaster and event co-ordinator, together with a background of senior management in the hotel and catering industry means you can confidently leave all the arrangements to me if you want a hassle free experience.
It pays to remember that nothing goes right by accident!
To help with pre-planning, I can ...
- assist with event planning, timings and programming
- offer guidance on speeches, etiquette and protocol (this will be especially relevant if you have royalty or civic dignitaries attending).
- advise on the needs of caterers, florists and other event service providers
- help with table planning if you have a food service.
On the day of your event I can...
- co-ordinate with the caterers and venue staff
- welcome and direct your guests as appropriate
- assist with photographers. media, gathering groups etc
- make announcements and introductions for you
Time to talk
I also give illustrated talks to groups and clubs. Dressed in my full livery as the Town Crier of Kendal my talk is entitled " It's a Crying Game!". Starting with the history of Town
Criers, I answer the questions that I am most frequently asked, Why? How? When? To date my talk has been well received, I like to think it is both informative and entertaining..
